Kitchen cabinet handles need to look good, but they also need to work comfortably every day. Because kitchen drawers and cabinet doors are opened dozens of times a day, often with wet or greasy hands, the details matter more than they do in a bedroom. This guide covers how to choose size, material and finish, and where to place the handles.
Think about how the kitchen is used
A kitchen handle is touched constantly, so look for these qualities:
- A comfortable grip. You should be able to get your fingers behind the handle easily.
- A smooth, easy-to-wipe surface. Deep grooves and sharp details collect grease and dust.
- A firm fixing. Handles that wobble loose after a few weeks are usually a sign of the wrong screw length or a poor fit.
Choose the right size
Most kitchen handles are sold by hole spacing, which is the distance between the centres of the two screw holes.
| Where it goes | Common hole spacing |
|---|---|
| Small drawers and cupboard doors | 64 mm to 96 mm |
| Standard drawers and doors | 96 mm to 128 mm |
| Wide drawers | 160 mm to 256 mm |
As a simple proportion rule, wider drawers look better with longer handles, and narrow doors look better with shorter ones. If you are replacing handles, measure your existing holes and choose the same hole spacing so you do not need to drill again. Our guide on how to measure cabinet handle hole spacing explains the method, and the cabinet handle size guide covers proportions in more detail.
Where to place kitchen handles
- Base cabinet doors: place the handle near the top corner on the opening side, usually about 50 to 75 mm in from the edges.
- Wall cabinet doors: place the handle near the bottom corner on the opening side, using the same distance from the edges.
- Drawers: centre a single handle on the drawer front. For wide drawers, use a longer bar or two handles spaced evenly.
- Tall pantry doors: use a long vertical handle with the centre at a comfortable hand height.
Whatever pattern you choose, repeat it on every door so the kitchen looks consistent. A paper template with the hole positions marked saves a lot of mistakes. Our guide on how to install cabinet handles and knobs shows the full method.
Choose a material and finish that is easy to live with
- Aluminium handles are light and affordable, and they come in modern finishes that suit most kitchens.
- Zinc alloy handles feel heavier and more solid.
- Brass has a premium look and suits classic and luxury kitchens.
Finish also affects how much cleaning you will do. Darker matte finishes can show fingerprints and grease more readily, and shiny finishes such as chrome can show water marks, so plan on a quick wipe in a busy kitchen. For a deeper comparison, see our guides on choosing a handle finish and brass vs aluminium handles.
Handles, knobs or both?
A popular and practical approach is to use knobs on cabinet doors and handles on drawers, because handles are easier to grip when a drawer is heavy. Using the same finish for both keeps the kitchen looking unified.
Keep them looking new
Wipe handles with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, then dry them. Avoid harsh powders and abrasive pads, because they can scratch or dull the finish. Our guide on how to clean and care for brass, matte black and chrome handles lists what is safe for each finish.
Before you order
- Count doors and drawers separately, and note the hole spacing for each type.
- Choose one finish and one style so the kitchen looks consistent.
- Check door and drawer thickness so the screws fit.
- Read the listing for exact size, material and hole spacing.

Frequently asked questions
What size handle is best for kitchen drawers?
Most kitchen drawers suit hole spacing between 96 mm and 160 mm, and wider drawers look better with 160 mm to 256 mm. The best size is also in proportion to the drawer width.
Where should the handle go on a kitchen cabinet door?
On base cabinets, place the handle near the top corner on the opening side. On wall cabinets, place it near the bottom corner. A distance of about 50 to 75 mm from the edges is a common starting point.
Which finish is easiest to keep clean in a kitchen?
Any finish is easy to clean if you wipe it regularly. Darker matte finishes can show fingerprints and grease more readily, and chrome can show water marks, so choose the one whose look you like and keep a cloth handy.
Can I mix handles and knobs in the same kitchen?
Yes. A common choice is knobs on cabinet doors and handles on drawers, in the same finish so the kitchen still looks matched.
